Lebanon . A government plan to implement a on calls made with WhatsApp (as well as other services that use a voice-over-internet protocol, like FaceTime) ignited mass protests and was hastily withdrawn by the administration. Of course, the so-called “WhatsApp tax” was not the only trigger — the protests were the culmination of growing Lebanese frustration about government mismanagement — but the fact that WhatsApp sparked the backlash shows just how important a role the app plays in peoples’ lives.
